Jera, Rani’s first child, Sulawesi Black Monkey in Ragunan Zoological Park


Almost one year old Jera, female baby Macaca nigra, the first child of Jen and Rani. Jera was born on November 15, 2017 at the Schmutzer Primate Center in good health and well cared  by her mother.

Sulawesi black monkey (Macaca nigra) is a primate species endemic to North Sulawesi. This species occupies primary and secondary tropical rainforest habitats in several locations on the northern peninsula of Sulawesi Island and several satellite islands. One of these locations is the Tangkoko-Batuangus Nature Reserve (CA), which is located in North Bitung District, Bitung City, North Sulawesi.

The population of black monkeys at Tangkoko-Batuangus CA has decreased by 75% since 1979 due to habitat destruction and hunting activities. Sulawesi black monkeys by IUCN are categorized as endangered and CITES listed in Appendix II
